Through out the second unit of
inquiry “My Country”, grade two students enjoyed inquiring about the
different landforms, the climate and other components that make their
country a special place to live in. The students were highly engaged in
writing what they know about their country and what they want to know in
order to gain deep knowledge. They explored Jezzine’s mountains to find
answers for their questions. They worked cooperatively to create
headlines about the relationship between temperature and weather after
reading the song (Then I’ll Know). They even learned to distinguish
between cloudy, windy, sunny, foggy, and rainy weather conditions.
Moreover, it was really fun for the students to learn about the location
of Lebanon on our world map and its climate through experiments done in
the science lab that aroused their interest and curiosity. These
hands-on experiences were important in helping students connect ideas to
the real world and to each other. In addition, the students grasped lots
of new vocabulary words especially while reading stories, poems, songs
and documents related to the central idea. The learners were able to
integrate the calendar with the weather report. They even typed songs
about Lebanon on the computer while making sure to develop their
Microsoft word skills. All in all, grade two students demonstrated
tremendous curiosity to participate in classroom discussions and were
enthusiastic to show appreciation for all the information they acquired
about their country.
