and I remember, involve me and I understand.”
Effective math teaching and learning is achieved through the selective
use of a broad range of strategies and tools to meet particular learning
needs. Teachers in Houssam Eddine Hariri High School are learners
through participating in workshops and developing their mathematical
understandings. In May, a workshop was held in Dubai under the title,
“The Role of Math in the PYP”.
The goal of the PYP mathematics curriculum is to structure math
education so that children experience the enjoyment and fascination of
mathematics and see its value and importance as they gain confidence and
skills. We believe it is important that students acquire mathematical
understanding by constructing their own meaning, through ever-increasing
levels of abstraction. It is expected that children will apply
previously learned knowledge as they progress through the mathematics
curriculum. Students investigate, question, discuss, and justify.
Special emphasis is placed on developing a positive attitude towards
learning mathematics and relating mathematical concepts to real-life
situations. We also believe that a wide range of resources, including
manipulatives, is fundamental to the teaching and learning of
mathematics because they make mathematics meaningful. Since mathematics
is a way of thinking, a language for making meaning, some mathematical
concepts are integrated within units of inquiry.
